Healthy babies need regular check-ups too. Well-baby visits track growth and development, catch problems early, and give parents a place to ask the questions that come up every week in the first years.
What happens at a well-baby visit
- Weight, length and head size, plotted on growth charts
- Developmental milestones: holding the head up, sitting, crawling, first words, walking, play and social smiles
- Feeding: breastfeeding support, formula when needed, and starting solid food at around six months
- Sleep, crying and safe sleep habits
- Vaccinations due, and a reminder for the next ones
- Vision, hearing and dental checks as appropriate for age
- Time for your questions
Suggested visit schedule
Usually at birth or in the first week, then at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, and 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months, often combined with vaccination visits. After 2 years, once or twice a year.
When to see a doctor urgently
In a baby under 3 months: any fever. At any age: poor feeding, unusual drowsiness or floppiness, fast or difficult breathing, bluish lips, repeated vomiting, fewer wet nappies, a bulging soft spot, a seizure, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Go to the nearest children's emergency department.
Frequently asked questions
Babies grow at different rates. What matters most is steady growth along their own curve on the chart. We will tell you if the pattern needs attention.
Around six months, while continuing breastfeeding. Start with soft, mashed home food and add variety gradually.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics advises no screen time under 2 years, except video calls with family, and no more than 1 hour a day of good-quality content for ages 2 to 5, with a parent watching alongside.
Bring your child's health record or vaccination book, any previous reports, and a short list of questions. It also helps to note feeding, sleep and anything new you have noticed since the last visit.
