Hypertension clinic
Diagnosis and long-term care of high blood pressure in Nagpur: tests for causes and organ damage, lifestyle and medicines, ECG on site.

High blood pressure is often called a silent condition because most people feel nothing until it causes damage. The ICMR-INDIAB study estimated that more than a third of Indian adults have high blood pressure, and many do not know it. Over years, uncontrolled blood pressure strains the heart, kidneys, eyes and brain and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.
When is blood pressure "high"?
In Indian and international guidelines, a clinic reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher on repeated occasions is usually diagnosed as hypertension. At home, the threshold is lower: an average of 135/85 mmHg or higher. Readings between 120/80 and 139/89 are above the ideal range and deserve attention, especially with diabetes.
What the hypertension clinic includes
- Accurate measurement in the clinic, and guidance on home blood pressure monitoring
- Tests to look for causes in younger patients or difficult cases: kidney function, electrolytes, thyroid, urine tests, and others as indicated
- Checks for organ effects: ECG, 2D Echo when indicated, kidney tests, retinal photograph
- Assessment of overall heart risk: cholesterol, sugar, smoking, weight and family history
- A treatment plan: salt and diet changes with our nutritionist, activity, weight, sleep and stress, and medicines when needed
- Regular follow-up until blood pressure is at target, then periodic review
How to check blood pressure at home
- Use an automatic upper-arm monitor, not a wrist monitor
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat, arm resting at heart level
- No tea, coffee, smoking or exercise for 30 minutes before
- Take two readings one minute apart, morning and evening, for 7 days before your visit, and bring the record
When to see a doctor
In an emergency
Very high readings with symptoms such as severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, blurred vision or weakness on one side need emergency care: call 108 or 112. Otherwise, see a doctor if your home readings stay above 140/90 mmHg, or if you are under 30 with high blood pressure.
