A quick ECG at Niramay Clinics, Dhantoli, Nagpur. What it records, when it is needed, and what to expect.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Ajay V. Kaduskar · Last reviewed 24 October 2026

An ECG records the electrical signals of your heart through small sticky pads placed on the chest, arms and legs. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes and needs no preparation; you will feel nothing more than the sticky pads.
What an ECG can show
- Heart rate and rhythm, including irregular rhythms such as atrial fibrillation
- Signs of a previous heart attack, or strain on the heart
- Thickening of the heart muscle
- Effects of some medicines and of potassium or other salt imbalances
When it is done
As part of diabetes and blood pressure check-ups, before some treatments, for palpitations, dizziness or chest discomfort, and in preventive health check-ups.
Good to know
A normal resting ECG does not rule out all heart disease, because some problems appear only during exertion. Your doctor may then advise a treadmill test or Echo.
In an emergency
If you have chest pain right now, do not book an ECG. Call 108 or 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
When to see a doctor
In an emergency
An ECG is routine, but chest pain or pressure, sudden breathlessness, fainting, a racing or irregular heartbeat with dizziness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back needs urgent attention - call 108 or 112 rather than booking a routine test.
Frequently asked questions
An appointment helps us keep your waiting time short, but an ECG is quick and we try to fit in patients who walk in during OPD hours. Call ahead if you are in a hurry.
Yes. An ECG only records your heart's electrical signals through sticky pads on the skin. Nothing enters the body, there is no radiation, and it is safe in pregnancy and for children.
The recording itself takes a few minutes. Including preparation and a short discussion of the report, plan for about 15 to 20 minutes at the clinic.
The tracing is available almost immediately and Dr. Ajay usually reviews it during the same visit, so you leave with the report and its meaning explained.
